Drawing on a lifetime of scholarship William Dalrymple’s latest, The Golden Road, offers a revolutionary new history of India. Shifting the lens from the Silk Roads, Dalrymple expertly outlines the subcontinent’s cultural flow along the ‘Golden Road’ that stretched from the Red Sea to the Pacific, reinstating India as the great intellectual and philosophical superpower of Ancient Asia.

From the largest Hindu temple in the world at Angkor Wat to the Buddhism of Japan, from the trade that helped fund the Roman Empire to the creation of the numerals we use today (including zero), India transformed the culture and technology of the ancient world – and our world today as we know it.
